Production & Machine Taps

Machine taps are essential tools in metalworking, they provide the precision and efficiency necessary for high volume manufacturing and repair tasks, particularly within automated environments where speed and consistency is paramount. Here at Cromwell we stock an extensive range of machine taps from leading brands Sandvik, Dormer and Sherwood. For more information see our Hand and Machine Taps Guide.

What are Machine Taps?

Machine taps are used to create internal threads in materials through automated machinery. This process ensures consistent, accurate thread production, minimises human error and enhances overall production efficiency, making them indispensable in modern industrial operations.

When are Machine Taps used?

Machine taps are employed in situations requiring high volume precise threading, such as CNC machining and automated production lines. They are critical in industries where speed, accuracy and repeatability is essential, such as aerospace component production, automotive manufacturing and heavy machinery assembly.

Types of Machine Taps

There are various types of machine taps that are used for different threading applications:
Spiral Flute Taps  -    Designed for threading blind holes, these taps have spiral shaped flutes that help to lift chips out of the hole, preventing it clogging and ensuring a clean thread.
Spiral Point Taps  -    Ideal for threading through-holes, these taps feature a cutting edge that pushes chips ahead of the tap that improves chip removal and enhances the tapping speed and overall efficiency.
Straight Flute Taps  -    These are the most basic type of tap, the straight flute tap is versatile and can be used for threading both through and blind holes, although they are less efficient in chip removal compared to spiral taps.
Fluteless Taps  -    Also known as forming taps, instead of cutting threads these taps form threads by displacing material which results in stronger threads and eliminates the need for chip removal, making them suitable for ductile materials.
