What are infra-red and halogen heaters?

Infra-red and halogen heaters are a similar type of technology which uses electricity to heat an heating element and emit infra-red radiation. Infra-red radiation has low energy and is not ionising, making them safe for use without fear of negative health repercussions. The difference between infra-red and halogen heaters are mainly based on the "throw" or the distance the heat travels and can be felt. Halogen heaters also emit a high amount of light with their heat, which can help differentiate.

When are infra-red and halogen heaters used?

Infra-red and halogen heaters can be used in most situations where a heater is required. They tend to be more efficient than other forms of heating such as fan heaters, oil-filled heaters, and some storage heaters. They tend to be used primarily outside as they do not try to heat the air, but rather emit infra-red radiation to heat the user.

Considerations when choosing infra-red and halogen heaters

Heat output - The heat output is an important consideration as this will determine how much heat will be output and can be felt. This is important to be considered alongside the environment the heater will be used in to ensure proper heating.

Power rating - This rating determines the amount of energy required from the power outlet to run the heater.

Voltage - This determines the voltage required to run the heater. This should be considered when using the heater in different environments. Domestic settings use 230/240V whereas industrial sites use 110V.

What does BTU mean?

British thermal unit (BTU) is a measurement for a unit of heat. It is defined by the amount of energy required to heat one pound of water by one Fahrenheit. The modern SI equivalent to BTU is SI, and 1 BTU is equivalent to around 1055J.

Do infrared heaters use a lot of electricity?

Infrared and halogen heaters are some of the most efficient methods of heating, especially in outdoor environments due to them not heating the environment, but rather the person. There is also no warmup time and nearly all the heat emitted being radiated out to the user.

Do infrared heaters dry the air?

Due to the way infrared and halogen heaters emit their heat, they do not require the use of air from the room to warm (unlike fan heaters) as they warm the user directly. This means that infrared heaters do not dry the air in a room and reduce the need for humidifiers during the winter.
