What are lift tables?

Lift tables feature a platform supported by a scissor-like lifting mechanism, which can be operated manually, using electricity, hydraulics or pneumatics to lift products and people to high storage areas like racking for loading and unloading stock.

Why lift tables?

Smaller warehouse settings that don't have the space for fork lift trucks or VNA's will benefit from a lift table for picking and storing products and easily performing stock checks. They're also useful for completing maintenance and repair works at a height.

Lift table types

There's a wide choice of lift tables available on the market. Here are a few of the most common.

**• Mobile lift tables   -   **trolley-like in design, these lift tables can be moved around where required

**• Low profile lift tables   -   **designed with a low profile table that allows products to be loaded via forklife and pallet truck. Often features a ramp

**• Static lift tables   -   **these are permanently fixed in place

**• Lift and tilt tables   -   **a tilting feature assists with storing heavier items

Considerations when choosing lift tables

Platform size - this should be either the same size as the load being lifted or slightly larger.

Maximum weight capacity - this should meet or exceed the maximum weight you wish to load onto the table and will be found on the technical data sheet under SWL or Safe Working Load.

Other features - features that may suit your operations include a trolley-like, mobile lift table or a tilt function for heavier loads.

Safety - working at a height requires a risk assessment, especially when lifting people. Barriers are a good option to prevent items falling, as are safety harnesses to protect against falling from a height.

Lift table jargon buster

To keep you up to date with European safety standards, we've broken down and explained an applicable standard.

What does the standard BS EN 1570-1:2011 + A1:2014 mean?

This standard outlines the safety requirements for lift tables used for both an operator and goods. This standard is only applicable to machines that deliver up to two fixed landing points and where the table doesn't exceed a fixed landing point.

Let's break it down...

• BS - This standard was published by the British Standards Institute

• EN - This is the current European standards body

• 1570 - The assigned legislation number

• 1 - The part of the document that relates to industrial lifting tables

• 2011 - The year the initial standard was published

• A1 - This highlights the addition of an amendment to the standard, in this case there has been a single amendment

• 2014 - This is the publication date of the amendment

FAQs

How does a lift table work?

Lift tables utilise hydraulic cylinders to separate the scissor-like lifting system. This extends each scissor section to lift the table to the required height.

What are the advantages to using a lift table?

A lift table offers a convenient lifting solution in industrial settings. It helps to prevent lifting injuries and provides a stable and reliable platform for moving and storing stock safely.
