What are stud extractors?

Stud extractors are a tool which can either be used manually or with a power tool to extract embedded, broken, or damaged studs. Stud extractors are usually made of high carbon steel or hardened steel allowing them to easily route into the damaged screw or stud and then extract them.

Why use stud extractors?

Stud extractors should be used when there is a damaged stud or screw and damage to the surrounding workpiece is not acceptable. An example of this is when needing to remove a stud from an engine block and it is not possible to cut out the stud.

When are stud extractors used?

Stud extractors are used when a damaged or seized stud is required to be removed from the workpiece to continue the project. They work in a way which doesn't damage the surrounding area of the workpiece and cleanly remove only the damaged stud.

Stud extractor types

There are various of stud removers available on the market, which differ based on the required tasks. For example, some stud removers an impact tool whilst with others a single tool can be used on multiple stud sizes.
Here are a few of the different stud extractor types:

• Impact stud extractors - This type of stud extractor is used with an impact wrench tool and works like a chuck. The extractor fits around the stud and tightens like a chuck would to a drill bit, and the friction and rotation of the tool will extract the stud from its socket.
• Stud remover and installer - This tool can both tighten and loosen studs of multiple sizes by offering multiple holes which a stud can fit into the best and be turned either clockwise or anti-clockwise to either tighten or loosen the stud respectively.
• Stud extractor sets - Stud extractor sets are like socket sets for hand and power tools. These are specially designed tools which fit around stud and are rotated clockwise or anti-clockwise to tighten or loosen the stud. As they come in a set, each stud extractor socket is for a single size.

The stud extractor will then grip into the damaged fastener from either the outside or inside and an anti-clockwise rotation will release the stud from its socket.
